ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - New Mexico prison inmates are set to sell artwork at the site of one of the deadliest prison riots in the nation's history.
The New Mexico Corrections Department said Thursday that visitors to "Old Main" will have an opportunity to buy inmates' artwork beginning in May.
Last October, the Corrections Department opened the historic site for public tours and officials plan to host a dozen or so tours this year.
Officials say portions of the proceeds the artwork will go to children of inmates, victims of crime organizations, and back into other inmate programs.
In February 1980, inmates at New Mexico's "Old Main" prison killed 33 fellow prisoners in a violent clash that included beheadings, amputations and burned bodies.
The riot led to massive reforms within New Mexico's prison system.
