A Roswell police officer is being hailed a hero.

The officer responded to a fire call.

He got to the scene before firefighters and risked his life to save a woman inside a burning home.

It was late Friday night when a terrified neighbor called 911.

“I'm at 311 Swinging Spear Road and there's a fire," said Samantha Andrade in a call to police.

Andrade’s neighbor’s house was on fire.

“There's people in the house, and I think there's a family in this house," Andrade told 911.

There was a woman inside the burning home.

A Roswell police officer was one of the first emergency responders on scene.

Officer Chris King arrived before the fire department did.

That’s when Andrade told him her neighbor was inside.

"As soon as he heard that there was somebody in there, he just went for it," said Andrade.

Officer Chris King kicked in the door and walked into the burning home to bring the woman to safety.

“No hesitation whatsoever.  He got out of that car, he pulled up right in between the two houses, he opened his door, he ran up to the front and we said there’s a woman in the house and he just lunged to the door and that was it," said Andrade.

Now the neighborhood is calling Officer King a hero.

“One minute he was there and the next minute he was gone.  He is definitely a hero," said Andrade.

The woman rescued was airlifted to a Texas hospital.

Officer King was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, but he has been released.

The Roswell Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
