In Tuesday's special election, Chaves County voters shot down a tax increase that would have benefited Eastern New Mexico University in Roswell.

According to the Roswell Daily Record, 66 percent of voters cast their ballots against the increase.

University president John Madden waited at the Chaves County clerk's office overnight as the votes were tallied. He said the results are devastating to the campus. The increase would have generated about $2 million for the university.

"We are going to survive. One way or another, we will survive. We will simply survive with less," he said.

The president took some heat from the community yesterday after calling people who wouldn't vote in favor of the levy "scum" in the Daily Record.

Madden says they'll now have to cut some programs, but he did not specify which ones.
