It’s been a battle for one Albuquerque neighborhood plagued by cars smashing into their yards.

They’ve been begging the city for help for a year.

Now, something's finally happened.

The neighborhood surrounding 114th St. and De Vargus seems quiet:  No children playing and no outdoor gatherings.

A broken-down wall explains it. A car has barreled through one backyard more than ten times already.

Neighbors say at least four different families have moved out of a corner house on Pelican Rd.

“The first family moved out because of that (car crashes), I know that for sure,” said resident Krisha Armada.

Armada is in the Army and knows firsthand about public protection; something she says the city has not been doing in her community.

“At least make the road go more that way and widen it so that house doesn’t get more damage than it has to,” she said.

As soon as KOB Eyewitness News 4 heard about the most recent crash last month, we went to City Councilor Ken Sanchez.

Since then the city has put in more signs, a speed monitor and more barricades.

“I think we are moving in the right direction so these people and these families can sleep at night and feel safe,” Sanchez said.

The city also promises more signs and lighting will come soon.

“KOB 4 On Your Side was on the side of the residents on this particular case because I had been out there we had called our staff and nothing had been done,” Sanchez said.

The city says despite their efforts they're still battling drunk drivers. Bags of beer bottles were found dumped 100 yards away from this dangerous 90-degree turn.
