A man in the running for a mission to Mars has a nice trip in store, even if he doesn't make the cut.

Ken Johnston is one of about a thousand candidates hoping to be selected for the non-profit Mars One project.

Johnston began working in aerospace in the 1960s, when he was chosen as one of the first civilian consultant pilots for the Apollo program.

Because of his experience, Johnston has been selected to speak at a Mars One conference in Switzerland this March – the only candidate to do so.

He also spoke to KOB Eyewitness News 4 about the selection process, which will be carried out on a reality show.

Astronauts will be put into teams of four and the winners will be named on launch day.

That launch is still a long ways away.

The first mission is expected to launch in 2024.
