In New Mexico, we love green chile, so a recall of Bueno frozen green chile was big news this week.
But, people started contacting KOB Eyewitness News 4 with some strange claims about what they've heard is happening to the recalled chile.
A rumor can be devastating for a business, so KOB reached out to Bueno to clear the air and to restore our faith in one of our favorite foods.
Urban myths or rumors can really hurt a business.
In the 1990s, Snapple had to attack rumors that it supported the KKK.
Proctor and Gamble had to change its logo to stop rumors about satanic ties.
Mountain Dew sales took a hit when rumors spread that the dye in its soda reduced male fertility.
The latest target hits home: Bueno Foods.
Bueno recently recalled its frozen non-ready-to-eat green chile due to the possibility of low level of listeria bacteria.
Viewers have reached out to KOB about rumors that the recalled chile is being cooked and resold.
Bueno assures us that this simply is not true.
In a statement emailed to KOB Friday afternoon, Bueno said:
"Bueno Foods does not respond to rumors. However, returning products is part of recall protocol per Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. All returned product from grocery store shelves is destroyed.
As we stated earlier this week, when Bueno Foods’ Green Chile is cooked in accordance with the product’s label instructions (keep frozen until used and cook to 165 degrees) there is no health or safety risk.
All processing of green chile is regulated and approved by FDA."
Bueno wants everyone to know that all FDA rules are being followed to the letter of the law, and they're working hard to get more green chile back on store shelves.
