The only noise in the quiet neighborhood in north Rio Rancho is of children playing.

So it was hard for people to believe two people were shot at a home on Canyon Gate Place.

The shooting happened in the middle of the afternoon Saturday.

Neighbors say they saw a woman with a gunshot wound in the shoulder run across the street.

A man who was also shot ran down the block, before he collapsed.

Police tell KOB Eyewitness News 4 that woman is in stable condition, but the man died.

Rio Rancho police say the man responsible is 67-year-old Donald Alber.

A neighbor, Chris Ramos says Alber was franticly picking up dropped bullets and even asked Ramos to help reload his pistol.

Ramos was skeptical about helping Alber, because he had seen Alber in a rage before.

“He’s always yelling and upset about something he comes over and talks to me about it,” Ramos said.

Neighbors now are trying to find peace and get their neighborhood back to the quiet place they once knew.

Neighbors say Alber is a veteran and he and the gunshot victims knew each other.

The names of the victims have not been released.
