Four and a half hours southwest of Pueblo, Colorado, La Plata County is not seeing a windfall of marijuana tax revenues. The reason? There are no recreational pot stores in La Plata County.

“There are only one, at this time, what is known as grow operations in the county,’ According to Marianna Spishock, a codes enforcement officer for La Plata County.

Currently the state of Colorado is not issuing any licenses to sell recreational pot. Only those selling medical marijuana before January first were able to convert. La Plata County is taking this time to prepare for the new licenses.

“Staff at La Plata County have been following the directives of the county commissioners to work on developing regulations for building codes, land use and licensing relative to the new recreational marijuana state laws,” said Spishock.

The application process begins in June and the county will be ready with regulation that has been written and reviewed by all the relevant county departments.

Spishock said, “The board has told us to develop these regulations as expediently as possible and we have been diligently working toward that goal.”

The county wants to make sure they regulate recreational marijuana  right and since there is no model to draw from, they prefer to take the time necessary to build regulation that will not negatively impact residents of the county.
