Millions of dollars are spent on promoting sugary drinks, chips and fast food each year, but The First Lady wants it out of our public schools.
Michelle Obama is putting pressure on companies trying to sell junk food to kids.
“I think we could all agree that our classrooms should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food,” The First Lady said.
The proposal would ban ads like the Pepsi and Dion’s pizza sign on the scoreboard at Milne stadium.
Mrs. Obama says this is one of many ways to fight childhood obesity.
Local students say taking down the signs won't change how they eat.
High school student Alyssa Chavez said, “Whether it’s up there or not people are going to drink it.”
Rigo Chavez, a spokesperson with Albuquerque Schools, says it’s too early in the process to tell how this would impact their contracts with these food companies. Chavez says the only food ads on school property are at the stadiums.
“I think it's a good idea to promote good health,” said educator Meghan Cheshire. She supports the idea but there is a long way to go.
“They are going to make their own choices regarding food whether or not advertising is there they know what they like and they go for the food that they like,” she said.
