The city of Albuquerque has a new fire chief.

On Tuesday morning, Mayor Richard Berry appointed the department's acting chief, David Downey, as the new chief.

Downey has been with AFD for 20 years.

"We have a great department here in Albuquerque. As its fire chief, my first priority is always going to be the health and safety of our firefighters—it's the upmost importance to me through training, professional development, education… We'll continue to provide safe and effective all-hazard emergency response," Downey said.

Between 2010 and 2013, Downey was the deputy of operations until he became interim fire chief.

Former Chief James Breen retired in December after 23 years with the department.
