Neighbors call Patrick Luna a hero. The 16-year-old Albuquerque boy knocked out one burglar and helped cops chase down his partner in crime.

It happened Wednesday afternoon on the city’s West Side. Patrick got home from school just in time to help neighbors chase burglars who broke into is sister’s house right down the street.  Patrick tailed one burglar down 53rd Street and caught him on the corner at Iliff. Pow! Knuckle sandwich and nap-time on the asphalt!

Simon Griego’s mug shot taken at the county jail a little later on shows some damage. He didn’t look much better at his felony first appearance in court Thursday afternoon. Remember – this is a 27-year-old man. Patrick Luna is a 16-year-old boy.

“I was pretty mad because they already broke into my sister’s house before,” Patrick said. “I was just like, I’m gonna get this guy if I can get him. Soon as I seen him it was game on, basically.”

Patrick admits he has knocked somebody out before.

“Yeah, I’ve done it a couple of times, but it’s not really something I admire doing.”

“I think he’s a hero,” said his next door neighbor Linda Torres. “We need to have more people realize that we have to defend ourselves sometimes when the police can’t be everywhere. They’re only human beings just like we are. We need to help each other. The whole neighborhood  was out!”

The other guy is 40-year-old Dana Lamonda. Police say they caught him running away from the scene. He’s probably thankful Patrick didn’t catch him.

Patrick Luna is a sophomore at Health Leadership, a charter high school. He wants to be an EMT.
