Albuquerque police say a man shot Sunday during a confrontation with officers in the Foothills has died.

APD spokeswoman Tasia Martinez said the department is awaiting identification of the man from the Office of the Medical Investigator.

The incident began on Sunday afternoon in an open-space area in the Foothills near Piedra Vista Road NE.

Police received reports of a "suspicious" man who was camping illegally in the area.

When officers approached the man, police said he became irritable. The man was reportedly armed with a knife.

The two officers chose to step back and the Crisis Intervention Team was called to the scene.

At a certain point, the man requested that New Mexico State Police respond to the scene. He told APD that he had a "liaison relationship" with state police.

Two state police officers arrived at the scene and started to talk with the man.

CIT did engage the suspect throughout the incident, but police said he threatened officers with a knife. That's when an APD officer fired a shot at the suspect.

Chief Gorden Eden said non-lethal force was fired fired before the gun.

"Most of you have been around the Albuquerque area long enough to know that this base of the mountain is rocky and hilly and this is where this situation occurred. So we have a lot of area to look at and search and many people to interview," Eden said.

The man was taken to UNM Hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.
