LOCO HILLS, N.M. -- Four oilfield workers were injured in an oil well explosion on Wednesday morning.

According to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, the workers were conducting maintenance on the well when a seal failed. A pipe released down the well created back pressure of air and crude oil. When the pressure released, it returned to the surface at a high pressure, injuring the workers.

One of the workers was flown to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, for treatment. The three other workers were treated locally.

New Mexico State Police are investigating whether a hazmat release took place during the explosion. Companies involved also sent safety personnel to assist in the investigation.
