The Albuquerque Public School District says there seems to be a bad stomach bug outbreak at Dolores Gonzales Elementary School.
The District sent a letter home for parents Friday. It said they are currently experiencing a higher than normal instance of gastrointestinal illness among the students. The district says they are treating this as if it is Norovirus.
One mother, Cherise Rumley, said her son's teacher called her Thursday to tell her to keep her son home from school on Friday because of the outbreak.
"She was like there hasn't been a janitor over here in two weeks and everybody is throwing up and sick," Rumley said. "They sent 20 students home yesterday because they were violently ill and I kept my son home today because I can't afford him to be sick."
APS didn't confirm the concern about a lack of janitors. They also did not specifically say that they would have staff cleaning the school this weekend. But they did include a paper with the letter for parents on how to disinfect for Norovirus.
