Everybody knows that the yellow zone is for loading and unloading only, but at the Durango- La Plata airport, some people use it for a little more than that.
“Every day, you could go down and find some vehicles parked in front of the terminal which is abnormal. There is no airport that I am aware of that allows you to park in front of the terminal, exit the vehicle and leave the vehicle unattended,” Said Kip Turner, Durango-La Plata Airport Director of Aviation.
It seems that a La Plata county ordinance that allows airport officials to designate no parking, doesn’t give authority to the airport to enforce those zones.
“For us to do that we had to go forward with an ordinance with the county to try and have a mechanism to enforce the areas we already had designated as no parking,” said Turner.
It creates a number of hazards, to drivers, to pedestrians and to safety in general.
“For TSA, they consider it a security risk and a hazard for leaving unattended vehicles that close to the terminal,” said Turner.
Turner says they don't expect to have any extra revenue from this ordinance, but the goal is to make all 400,000 that pass through the terminal feel safe.
“We are more about the customer experience and more about making that experience an enjoyable one, yet a safe one.”
Airport officials say they will probably just give warnings for the first month after the ordinance takes effect in late May-- the fine is modest, just 15 bucks.
