Detectives with the Albuquerque Police Crimes Against Children unit arrested a 24-year-old woman after a toddler was found unresponsive Sunday afternoon.

Ashley Montano is charged with child abuse and one count of child abuse resulting in great bodily injury.

According to the criminal complaint, Montano called 911 just before 2 p.m. and said she found the 2-year-old girl unresponsive at her home in the Westgate Community in southwest Albuquerque.

Paramedics observed that the child had facial bruises and transported her to UNM Hospital. The child underwent emergency surgery for a brain bleed.

At first, Montano told police she observed the child fall off the bed in her room, but police said she later admitted to striking the child at least five times with the palm of her hand and throwing her to the floor at least four times because the girl was "throwing a temper tantrum."

A field investigator also observed bruises on the child's buttocks. According to the complaint, Montano also admitted to spanking the child on Saturday.

According to APD spokeswoman Tasia Martinez, the child sustained serious injuries and remains in guarded condition at a local hospital.

No further information about the incident has been released.
