CARLSBAD, N.M. -- The nuclear waste facility near Carlsbad plans to adopt new protocols in the event of emergencies.

Officials at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant made changes to their emergency procedures after an underground salt truck fire in February. Senior management practiced the revised procedures in a training drill this week.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Energy released a lengthy report citing problems with WIPP's procedures and response to the fire.

On Thursday, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway and the Department of Energy will co-host a town hall meeting featuring updates on WIPP recovery activities. The meetings are held every Thursday at the Carlsbad City Council Chambers, located at 101 N. Halagueno Street. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
