The 2-year-old girl found unresponsive at a home in southwest Albuquerque over the weekend is now listed in stable condition at UNM Hospital.
Albuquerque police spokeswoman Tasia Martinez confirmed the child's status update on Wednesday. The toddler underwent emergency surgery on Sunday for a brain bleed.
The child's caretaker, 24-year-old Ashley Montano, called 911 and said the girl was unresponsive after falling off the bed. Paramedics at the scene observed facial bruises on the child and took her to UNM Hospital, where doctors notified CYFD and Crimes Against Children to open an investigation.
Police said Montano later admitted to striking and throwing the child to floor because she was having a temper tantrum.
Montano is charged with child abuse and child abuse resulting in great bodily injury. A judge set her bond at $100,000 during her arraignment on Tuesday.
Montano was reportedly watching the child because her mother is in jail on murder charges.
