Meet Ivan Lopez, a Rio Rancho native, has been walking for many hours and many miles toward his destination.

"I always walk from Espanola with the old lady's family but I've never made it from our house so I just want to see if I could do it. I do a little prayer on the way if I could for all my family and friends that are hurting."

Although he walks by himself, he's not alone on this quest. Hundreds began their pilgrimage to a sacred place for many New Mexicans.

The goal of every pilgrim is to make it through the gateway at the historic and beautiful Santuario de Chimayó."

While many have already made it inside, others, like the Armijo family from Santa Fe, are still on their way and consider the journey a family tradition.

"I don't think we really think about the pain as much as the sacrifice more than anything. Once we get there it's so rewarding and sometimes I've broken down knowing that I've made it all the way," said Melissa Armijo.

Different people. Different families. Different walks of life.

All marching towards their spiritual sanctuary.
