Investigators believe a body found in the desert northwest of Rio Rancho may be connected to a missing person's case.

The Sandoval County Sheriff's Department said people hunting for fossils found the body on Sunday.

Sources with the county and Rio Rancho police said clothing and a cell phone was found nearby.

Investigators told KOB the body may be Brenda Salas, but they are still awaiting positive identification through DNA tests and dental records.

Salas disappeared during the summer of 2012. She was last seen at the Walmart on Unser near Southern. Police found her vehicle shortly after, but no sign of her.
