There is a need for local forensic sketch artists in Bernalillo County.
Their drawing skills can lead to an arrest or find a person who has been missing for years.
A forensic artist brings memories to life with a stroke of a pencil Mary Brazas currently contracts with local law enforcement.
"Sometimes it goes full circle,” Brazas said, “You find out who did it, and they get convicted."
She is used for everything from sketching the face of a rape victim's attacker to reconstructing the face of a missing person.
"It’s like a puzzle," she said.
Brazas is only a handful of artists trained to work with forensics and investigators in Bernalillo County.
There are only two others.
Brazas thinks there is a shortage of forensic artists for a number of reasons.
“It can go a lot of ways,” she said, “Budgets or a lot of people don't like working with dead people, or remains or some people don't like working with victims of homicides or crimes.”
As heavy as the job is, Brazas says she does it to give back to people using her talents.
“Artists are all here to help the community,” she said, “We are here to serve.”
