Strong winds arrived in New Mexico early Saturday afternoon.

In the metro, winds ranged from wild to inconvenient. The Alta Mira KiteFest was packed and, at least for something, Mother Nature was kind. By Saturday evening, however, winds gusted nearly 60 mph in the metro, clouding the skyline with thick dust.

A health alert is in effect until 9 p.m. for people with asthma, chronic bronchitis or other respiratory problems. Health officials ask residents to limit time outdoors, keep windows and doors closed and run the air conditioner or heater with the recirculation mode only.

In the southern part of the state, the wind was severe all day. Wind speeds hit 65 mph in Ruidoso and more than 50 mph in other parts of southwestern New Mexico earlier in the day.

A tree landed on a van in Roswell, but the Roswell Fire Department says no one was seriously hurt.

Forecasters say the wind will only get worse on Sunday, bringing fire danger and tough road conditions for some drivers.
