The Albuquerque Police Department’s troubles, and the U.S. Department of Justice investigation into APD’s “pattern” of using excessive force have taken a toll on Mayor Richard Berry’s once-towering approval rating. Six months ago he won re-election to a second term with a whopping 68 percent of the vote, but things have changed.

A poll conducted this week by BWD Global of Albuquerque for politics blogger Joe Monahan shows Berry taking a beating, but still enjoying substantial support. 998 likely voters living in the city took part in the poll. It finds Berry with 56.6 percent approval, and 29.8 percent of the voters disapproving. 13.6 percent were not sure.

“No city is without challenges, and Albuquerque is no exception,” Berry said. “But we don’t want to allow that to become something that causes us to stop all the rest of the positive things that we’re doing. Let’s address the challenges and the issues, let’s keep pushing forward with all of the positive things that are happening. That’s what makes Albuquerque a great city.”

In fact  57 percent is not bad for any mayor, but for a Republican in a Democrat-majority city, it’s pretty remarkable. The poll shows 83.4 percent of Berry’s fellow Republicans still approve of the job he’s doing. Among Democrats, his approval is 36.7 percent, and among the city’s independent voters, the fastest-growing bloc of voters, he wins 63.8 percent approval.

The polling company, BWD Global, is headed by Bruce Donisthorpe, who, like Berry, is a Republican. Monahan’s blog,, is the most-read blog in New Mexico politics.
