New Mexico State Police have identified the man shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas, New Mexico, on Thursday.

Police said they were dispatched to a home around 4:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on a reportedly suicidal male, 48-year-old Arcenio Lujan.

When officers arrived, Lujan was seen entering and leaving the residence with a long rifle. Police spent 30 to 45 minutes talking with Lujan and attempting to get him to cooperate.

Police said Lujan then pointed the rifle at officers while approaching them, forcing them to fire in defense and striking Lujan.

Lujan died at the scene.

Police did not say how many shots were fired or how many struck Lujan.
