The Signal Fire has now consumed more than 5,700 acres of the Gila National Forest about 10 miles north of Silver City but is 15 percent contained.

During Tuesday night’s meeting at the Bayard Community Center, firefighters said they made a lot of good progress, using an interactive Google Earth map to show how they’re trying to contain it.

But with the wind expected to remain calm the next few days, the good news is the smoke should die down for now.

Firefighters have one big goal before Saturday:  Get as many fire lines in place as they can to try and contain the fire in case the winds come back this weekend.
