A couple who was forced to evacuate as the Signal Fire closed in around their cabin has been reunited with their pet cat after two tense nights not knowing if he'd made it.

Rupert, a six-year-old Siamese cat, was pretty dirty and smelled like wildfire smoke. But after some food and water, a bath, and some much needed affection, Rupert is doing just fine.

"He was whining really bad and howling up a storm but as soon as he heard me he settled right down so we brought him home," Benjamin Bevel said.

Bevel and his wife had to be airlifted to safety as the fire raced towards their home Sunday.

Rupert spent two days alone in a cage at their cabin waiting to be rescued by firefighters.

Luckily, the wildfire held back.

"They gave us almost no warning. The helicopter was there to pick us up and we were already loaded down with three dogs," Bevel said.

Tuesday, a team of firefighters returned to the cabin and rescued Rupert, reuniting him with his owners who are staying with relatives in Silver City until they can return home.

The Bevels say the fire is moving away from their property and they hope to get back home just as soon as firefighters give them the all-clear.
