High school graduate and basketball standout Connor Gorman is in the real world now and is finding job hunting is anything but a game.

He has been applying for summer jobs for the past month.

"It's the game of reality," he said.

You would think job interviews are a slam dunk but so far it's been a miss.

“I haven't had much luck but still being optimistic about it and hopefully something will come around the corner,” Connor said.

Connor isn’t alone.

A spokesperson with the New Mexico Workforce Connection says thousands of high school and college students are entering a tough market this summer.

There are fewer entry level jobs available compared to last year.

Many job applications end up at the Frontier Restaurant, but managers say they often have to turn people away.

“We get stacks of applications within a month,” said Assistant Manager Samantha Dearing says these students are competing with everyone.

Some employees are supporting families and take up entry level jobs, such as a seasonal opening just to get by.

“Even in our shift alone we've got people who are full time family people,” she said.

She advises to put your best foot forward in an interview.

You only get one shot at a first impression.

“I would come in a suit and with a résumé,” she said.

Connor says he's not going to give up because you'll never get a shot if you don’t try.

"Things could change on a dime much like a basketball game," he said.
