Gary Smith, a one-time Republican candidate for U.S. Congress, pleaded no contest Tuesday to felony stalking.

In January of 2013, police say Smith was caught on camera slashing the tires of his political opponent, Janice Arnold-Jones.

Police say Smith also targeted his campaign manager, Rhead Story.

Despite judges' orders to stay away from the victims, Smith was arrested for stalking Arnold-Jones and Storys' family.

"My wife caught him coming up to the car, slashing the tires, so we have had multiple encounters with him doing that," Story said last year. Story died of a stroke a few months after the interview.

Story's wife, Wanda, has been going to every court hearing since his death. Smith has been in jail for a year and a half.

"He will start back up as soon as he is back out," Wanda said. She says no matter what the sentencing may be, she does not feel Smith will get the help he needs.

"What would you like to see done?" KOB 4 reporter Jen Samp asked.

"He needs mental help," Wanda said, "Not just probation, not just sitting in a jail cell, he needs mental help."

Wanda says Smith is partially to blame for her husband's death. She says her husband's slashed tires prevented him from getting to doctor appointments. She says Smith also threatened her with an icepick.

"Unfortunately he didn't see the end of this and part of it was due to the fact that he couldn't make it to every doctor's appointment," she said.

Janice Arnold-Jones was not at the hearing. Smith was rescheduled for another sentence hearing in two weeks. Smith could face more jail time or probation.
