The Albuquerque Police Department is not saying why there was no video on Officer Jeremy Dear’s lapel camera when he fatally shot 19-year-old Mary Hawkes last month.

Wednesday, the Albuquerque Police Department announced that TASER, the company that manufactures lapel cameras, could not retrieve video from the camera of Officer Jeremy Dear, who shot Mary Hawkes in April. Police say Hawkes was accused of stealing a car and was holding a gun.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 asked police if the company was able to determine if the camera malfunctioned or if Officer Dear didn’t turn it on.

“The questions you have about whether or not Dear had turned on his camera are all part of an internal investigation and as such, we can not comment,” Janet Blair, a spokesperson for APD, said in a statement. “All I can tell is that lapel camera policies are under review.”

On Wednesday, police did release several short video clips from other officers’ cameras that did not capture the shooting. Audio was missing from several portions of those videos.

Mary Hawkes is visible in another clip from a surveillance camera at a car wash. The car wash released the video to KOB Eyewitness News 4 right after the shooting, and APD released it Wednesday. Hawkes is running with something in her hand; police say it’s a gun.

The rest of the clips seem to come after the shooting. They include an officer talking to dispatch about getting rescue units for Hawkes and one showing officers putting up caution tape.

APD also released a photo of the gun they say they found at the scene.
