A new website has emerged in the controversy swirling around the Albuquerque Police Department – a mysterious website with a title that’s evidently designed for shock value. How does “Did APD Kill Today” grab you?
The mystery is: Who’s behind this thing? Who started it? Who named it? For some reason, that information is shrouded in internet security and confidentiality.
Despite the somewhat inflammatory title, “Did APD Kill Today” is actually pretty mild-mannered and mainstream – not the kind of burn-down-city-hall kind of thing you might expect. It tells you whether anybody’s been killed, how many days since the last killing, and it links you to an Albuquerque Journal story on the latest police shooting. It also lets you read the U.S. Department of Justice investigation letter in its entirety, and it offers you a form letter you can email to the president of the city council.
We traced the website to a company in Orange County, California called DreamHost, and we called a contact number. All we got was a recorded message asking us to leave a message. We did find out that DreamHost is one of those web-hosting companies that helps companies develop and manage websites, while remaining anonymous if they want to.
Evidently, that’s what the owner or owners of “Did APD Kill Today” want for themselves – anonymity, while urging others to get involved and stay informed.
