New Mexico State Police say the inmate escapee who was shot and killed by Carlsbad police crashed a stolen vehicle into a residential fence before the shooting.
On Monday, state police said 24-year-old Troy Kirkpatrick assaulted a detention officer who took him to a doctor's appointment and then escaped from custody. He then fled to a nearby residence, where he located an unlocked car with keys in the ignition.
Kirkpatrick got into the vehicle and drove off.
Carlsbad police pursued Kirkpatrick through an alleyway, where he crashed through a residential fence. Police then fired shots at Kirkpatrick, according to state police.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting are not being released until they have been interviewed by New Mexico State Police agents.
