In a strange twist of fate, a bachelor party led to what appears to be a major paleontological find.
A group of friends were camping at Elephant Butte.
They were helping a man who got his truck buried in the sand when they came across something.
That something was a huge fossil of what state experts think could be a "stego-mastodon."
Paleontologists at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science are working with state parks and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to safeguard, carefully investigate and try to excavate the fossil as soon as possible.
