Before this season, all the leftover hot dogs, pretzels, and nachos at Isotopes Park would be simply thrown in the trash. Not anymore, thanks to the help of the Roadrunner Food Bank.

The battle against hunger in New Mexico has been an ongoing fight. The state has the highest childhood hunger ranking in the country and 4th highest in overall hunger.

Programs like the Roadrunner Food Bank do what they can to help.

"Before, there has been unsold food that just got thrown away and now there is a whole partnership of people who gather up that food and get it immediately out to help feed hungry people," said President and CEO of the Roadrunner Food Bank Melody Wattenbarger.

The program started last year with food from Balloon Fiesta. Now, others are joining in including the Renaissance Festival and Isotopes Park.

Patrick Queeney, General Manager of Ovations Food Services for the Isotopes, says that they've been trying to do this for the past couple of years.

"We've donated our time at the food bank just with our management staff and now that we're actually able to feed and help the needy, it feels good," Queeney said.

The Isotopes started helping this season. Just last month, 2,200 pounds of food was sent to the Roadrunner Food Bank. That's a lot of hot dogs!

With the help of the Isotopes, the Environmental Health Department along with the Roadrunner Food Bank has been able to rescue a little more than 11,000 pounds of food, which is feeding more than 9,300 New Mexicans.
