For kids who play competitive soccer, Bernalillo is the place to be this week.

More than 200 teams from as far as Hawaii are in the Albuquerque metro for the 2014 U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships. Winning this tournament means a ticket to compete on the national level.

The passion to win is at an all-time high, especially right now, when the best soccer players in the world are competing in the FIFA World Cup.

“You get to go home and see it at that level and you come back here and you’re inspired to try to do what they do,” said Bob Stolebarger from California.

“They all work for their team and it inspires me to like, work for my team,” said Maggie Maguire, who’s competing in the tournament.

While soccer is bringing these teams and their families to the Duke City, that’s not all their doing here. “We’re here and we’re spending a lot of money on hotels and car rentals and airplanes,” said Diane Scavuzzo, whose son is competing in the tournament.

That’s a lot of money coming back into New Mexico.
