While winds are expected to increase Thursday, the Southwest Area Interagency Type 3 Team still anticipates fire behavior to be minimal on the Navajo Nation.

The Assayii Lake Fire that burned nearly 15,000 acres is now 90 percent contained.

For safety reasons, the fire area remains closed to the general public. Fire officials say trees weakened by the fire may fall without warning and pockets of burned roots and holes, covered by dirt and ash, may continue to smolder beneath the ground.

Local livestock owners must continue to communicate and follow up on their needs with their local grazing officials, Chapter officials and Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture to obtain authorized access into the area.

A Burned Area Emergency Response Team is also assessing the potential post fire effects. Team members with backgrounds in hydrology, soils, archaeology, and forestry will prepare a document specific to the Assayii Lake Fire for distribution to the Navajo National Tribal Administration Office.
