KOB Eyewitness News 4 has obtained audio recordings of the interviews from both Albuquerque police officers who fired the fatal shots at mentally ill man James Boyd back in March.
Officers Keith Sandy and Dominique Perez were both questioned two days after the incident. They both describe seeing Boyd standing at a higher point than officers in the foothills, shouting threats at police.
They say Boyd had knives in his hands and it seemed he could easily lunge at officers. Perez said the team had already deployed a flash bang, Taser shotgun and a police dog, but said none of them had any effect on Boyd.
Both officers then said they fired bullets, and Boyd fell after a few hits.
"I felt that I had no other choice than to use deadly force. I did not think that the suspect was just going to stop there and stand there with his knives," Perez said in the interview.
Both officers say after Boyd was injured on the ground, he continued to hold onto his knives. They say bean bag rounds were then fired after Boyd was shot.
