The Cultural Services Department says 60,000 people attended the Freedom 4th celebration at Balloon Fiesta Park.

For many in attendance, the Fourth of July was about more than music or fireworks, but the setting made it even more special.

"Freedom. I fought for it. It's for freedom. That’s what it means to me."

It’s a day our forefathers' fighting made possible and today people are still fighting.

“We’re a free country, lots of my family and brothers have been in the military and it's a way to also support them and our country.”

Around 200,000 New Mexicans are veterans.

Many people we talked to say they're celebrating the fourth not just to honor America’s past, but its present and what those who serve now make possible for the rest of us.

Veteran Bryan Baldwin says he chose to serve our country for his family, who he spent the fourth with.

“It means a lot to us. Protecting and defending our country means a lot to us and you can't go wrong,” said Baldwin.

In all, a beautiful night. Perfect weather, a show from Wynonna -- the music that got people dancing and a fireworks show that got oohs and ahhs going from start to finish.
