A SWAT situation at Pros Ranch Market occurred Thursday afternoon near Atrisco and Central.

APD says Gabriel Matthews, 42, was spotted by police in a stolen truck near Central and Cyprus. When APD pursued the suspect, he parked the vehicle in Pro’s Ranch Market’s parking lot and ran inside. Customers at the store were evacuated by APD and it took several canine units to find him.

According to police, Matthews was believed to be armed, but when they apprehended him just before 5:00 p.m. in the market he did not have a weapon. He was found hiding inside a large walk-in freezer.

When police searched the stolen vehicle there was a stolen police tactical vest found. Police do not know which agency the vest belongs to at this time.

“I don't know what agency it's from if it's ours or someone else's. I don't know if there were other items such as teasers or guns involved,” said Tanner Taxier with APD. “All I know if there was a tactical vest from a local police department. It could be any one of the 15 around here.”

This isn’t Matthews’s first brush with APD. He’s been charged with a mix of theft and violent crimes. A total of three times this year and four times back in 2013.

Police say the Matthews has several battery with a weapon felony warrants against him.
