Maybe Celestino Centeno‘s nickname ought to be “Lucky 13” – because we’re all lucky he hasn’t killed anybody after 13 arrests for drunk driving.
Centeno found himself in a familiar place at week’s end – behind bars for his 13th drunk driving arrest. He didn’t look too unhappy in his 13th mug shot. He’s been convicted of DWI six times. Police said they were watching when Centeno backed his car out of a driveway in a neighborhood near Downtown and slammed into a curb, disabling the vehicle.
“Mr. Centeno displayed a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath, thick speech and bloodshot watery eyes,” the criminal complaint says. “Mr. Centeno denied drinking multiple times.”
Police said he refused to take a field sobriety test or a breath test. He’s now charged with aggravated DWI.
“I think there’s a pretty significant amount of luck that it has happened so far – that he hasn’t killed somebody,” said Mothers Against Drunk Driving state director Ben Lewinger. “These are just the times he was arrested, that he was caught participating in this behavior of drunk driving. There were probably, for each of these arrests, 80 other times that he’d driven drunk when he wasn’t caught.”
“Repeat offenders need to be held accountable, but these individuals must also address their addiction,” Bernalillo County District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said in a written statement. “It is imperative that our state work to increase sources of treatment and assistance.”
Centeno’s bond is set at $50,000.
