People use social media for many things. Now one Albuquerque man is using it to get healthy.
It's just your average morning for Steve Weinstein. In just a few months, he'll be competing in his first triathlon.
“Never in my wildest dreams thought that would it happen,” said Weinstein.
That's because around this time last year he weighed around 260 pounds.
Weight is something, he says, he's struggled with all his life.
“I was already pre-diabetic, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and things like that and so my health was going down that path,” he said.
And last fall, it started to limit the time he spent with his wife and three kids. So after months of research and consultations with his doctor at ABQ Health Partners Weinstein made a decision.
He received a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, known as the sleeve, a surgery that makes the stomach smaller. It was the beginning of his lifestyle change, which he documents for the world to see on You-Tube.
Weinstein knows some people might think this surgery was the "easy" way out.
He looks at it as a tool because if you ask him, it's eating right and exercising that's really is keeping him healthy. As well as these statistics, that found more than 80 percent of people who've lost weight regain all of it, or more after 2 years.
Now almost a year later, he's down 90 pounds. He's the same family man, only healthier.
