The Santa Fe Police Department plans to get rid of a work schedule that a former chief said was good for fighting crime, but that officers said was killing morale.

City spokeswoman Celina Westervelt confirmed police would be going back to a four-day workweek.

Former Chief Ray Rael instituted a five-day week back in 2011. He credited the change for a drop in property crime and officer overtime.

But the police union tells the Santa Fe New Mexican that the schedule was affecting the quality of life for officers and was even blamed for a couple of divorces.

The four-day workweek is set to begin Aug. 2.
