(NBC News) -- Few Americans can find the time to work out every day, but a new study shows that just a few minutes a day can produce huge benefits for your heart.

According to new research, just 5 minutes of running a day has been proven to reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

"Our study showed that only fairly small doses of exercise of running were needed to produce these profound benefits," said Dr. Carl Lavie, who works with The John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Carl Lavie and his colleagues followed 55,000 adults for 15 years and that found runners on average lived three years longer than others.
