There's a sight that has become all too common in southern Bernalillo County.
Anytime it rains, business owner David Trujillo says that areas along Barcelona Road don't drain. Trujillo says it's affecting his bottom line.
"I have two big investments that I'm trying to protect. One is my building here that has been damaged due to the rain and shifting soil. I also just built another building across the street that is also in jeopardy of having the same problem," Trujillo said.
That's not all that Trujillo is worried about. Emergency vehicles from the BernCo Fire and Rescue station on Barcelona had to slow down to get through the mess. An official with the county says that those vehicles were only delayed by a few seconds.
"Time is of the essence when it comes to emergency response," Trujillo said.
He also thinks of the children who walk through there, the bike riders who ride through there, and the cars that are scooping out the water of their floorboards when it floods. He sometimes feels that the South Valley gets neglected.
"We deal with certain things that other communities won't deal with. We're taxpayers too," he said.
All he wants is some kind of drainage system that actually works.
An engineer with Bernalillo County says that he's aware of the drainage issues on Barcelona Road. Right now, the county is working on some drainage projects in the South Valley, but work on Barcelona won't be done for at least another 4-5 years.
