The top lobbyist for the University of New Mexico is resigning from his position as director of Government and Community Affairs following his third arrest on DWI charges.

Marc Saavedra has been on administrative leave since his arrest on July 23. He has two previous DWI convictions.

Following an arrest for his second DWI in 2006, UNM said Saavedra pleaded guilty and signed a "Last Chance Agreement." Upon his successful completion of that agreement, a subsequent agreement was issued and signed that stated a re-occurrence could result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Saavedra's resignation takes effect Aug. 8.
