An Albuquerque father is behind bars after police said he left his 7-year-old daughter in a hot vehicle on Thursday.

Police responded to the Smith's store on Constitution NE on reports of a child left in a car for around 20 minutes. The temperature outside was around 80 degrees and authorities estimated the vehicle had reached 109 degrees within 10 minutes.

Upon arrival, several people in the parking lot waved down the officer and he made contact with the father, Denny Valliant, who was waiting by the car with a security guard.

The officer said Valliant admitted to leaving his daughter inside because "she didn't want to go inside" and was playing games.

According to the criminal complaint, the officer asked the child if she had water and she said she did not. Valliant had left a cell phone for her to call her grandmother in case of an emergency.

Valliant was taken into custody and charged with abandonment or abuse of a child.
