ALBUQUERQUE -- The intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. and Broadway is closed after a sinkhole opened up during a flash flood late Friday.

Heavy rains hit downtown Albuquerque just before 10 p.m. and trapped many vehicles in high water. The National Weather Service reports more than 2 inches of rain fell between downtown and the University District from 9:50 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Albuquerque Fire Department says one vehicle actually became completely submerged underwater near Broadway and Lomas. AFD also rescued a couple from the hood of their vehicle at 1st and Central with no injuries reported.

By the end of the night, crews had rescued about ten people from dangerous flood waters, but no one was hurt.

The Albuquerque Sunport measured 1.03 inches of rain and UNM measured 2.76 inches of rain.
