Heavy flash flood waters turned what was once a dugout into a pond; already saturated dirt just couldn’t take the extra water. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park wasn’t the only area affected; much of the city saw consequences of the heavy rain.

“The Broadway system, because of all that pressure, some manholes did pop off out of the asphalt and we are reconstructing those areas,” Municipal Development Director for the City of Albuquerque Michael Riordan said.

Pressure pumped out chunks of asphalt downtown, even causing a massive sinkhole. The city says damage will likely cost somewhere between $25-50,000 to repair.

The city of Albuquerque has studied ways to improve drainage in the area, but they’ll need funding before they can start those projects.
