A scathing opinion piece in Sunday’s New York Times about Albuquerque’s violent history has created various impressions from locals, transplants and people who once called the city home.

Author Justin St. Germain penned the piece, “Good-Bye Albuquerque, Land of Violence” that was posted online Saturday for the paper's weekend readers.

His impression left the city marred by fatal violence against homeless and mentally ill by the local police, and most recently by several teenagers.

Germain, the critically acclaimed author who wrote Son of Gun, gives personal examples of several bad experiences Albuquerque’s homeless faced with the local police and compares it to his experience with homeless treatment in other cities.

The nation read his Dear John letter after Gernain recently left New Mexico for a job in Nebraska.
