WINDOW ROCK, AZ--Mayor Richard Berry traveled to Window Rock, Arizona Friday to again meet with Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly, and the top of conversation was a task force.

“We came from Albuquerque to Arizona, across state lines, to address an issue that is important to our city and important to the Navajo Nation,” said Berry.

The Mayor and President Shelley met behind closed doors today.

Their goal was to set the frame work for a task force that will address homeless Native Americans in Albuquerque.

After the meeting, the mayor announced they will have a leadership team in place by next week

“By the end of this month I will have a task force director selected out of my office, with an appropriation from my office and by the middle of October or sometime before the end of October we are hoping to have a preliminary assessment completed.”

That assessment will contain budget recommendations for state and federal lawmakers.

Both the President and the Mayor called the meeting productive, but Shelly stressed that any solution must continue beyond the current administration.

“We really want to make this happen with its own funding, with special people that are very good at these things to be a part of it,” said Shelly.
