On Sept. 11, former Sandia High School Athletic Director Tom Knauber will face a pre-trial hearing in Albuquerque Metropolitan Court on a charge stemming from an April incident in which he allegedly planted drug paraphernalia in a basketball coach's office.

Knauber waived his arraignment on August 6. He is charged with misdemeanor malicious criminal prosecution.

Knauber called police on April 21 to report he had received an "anonymous tip" that Sandia High School basketball coach Alvin Broussard had paraphernalia in his office.

In a criminal complaint filed in the Metropolitan Court, APS police detective Gary Georgia said Knauber "conducted a haphazard search in what appeared to be an attempt to look around knowing where the paraphernalia was prior to arriving in the office."

Georgia later wrote in the report that "someone with specific knowledge would have to know where to find those contraband items."

After interviewing Broussard, the detective wrote that "it was rather clear…Coach Alvin Broussard knew nothing of the paraphernalia found in his office."

Knauber also erased the "anonymous tip" from his phone, leading detectives to report that "it seemed odd that an administrator would delete evidence of potential wrong doing by a staff member."

Knauber was seen on school surveillance cameras carrying what appeared to be a similar bag to that found with the paraphernalia into Broussard's office on the Friday before he alerted police on April 21.

Albuquerque Public Schools reassigned Knauber to a social studies position at Volcano Vista High School in June, but he has since retired.

Broussard is still the head basketball coach at Sandia High School.
